Matilda Sterby wins First Prize in the Schymberg Award 2022

Swedish soprano Matilda Sterby is the winner of the The Schymberg Award 2022 in Sweden. The competition, which should have happened in 2021, finally had its final on the 5th February 2022 in Sundsvall, Sweden.

The Schymberg Award was founded to commemorate the Swedish soprano Hjördis Schymberg (1909-2008), who had a notable international career, including over 100 performances with Jussi Björling.

The jury's motivation reads: ”For her beautiful lyric soprano voice, her clear musicality and her exciting stage presence, Matilda Sterby wins First Prize.”

Matilda is the second winner of the Schymberg Award, the first being Sofie Asplund in 2018. She competed this year against some of the best young soloists in Scandinavia - Elisabet Einarsdóttir, Jessica Elevant, Theodor Uggla, and Emilia Utter.

The final took place in Tonhallen in Sundsvall, and featured the Nordic Chamber Orchestra conducted by Eric Solén. The competition is a collaboration between the orchestra, the Schymberg Estate, and Hjördis Schymberg's Legacy Fund.

Matilda Sterby sings La Contessa for Staatsoper Hannover later this month.
