Swedish mezzo soprano Elisabeth Leyser and soprano Matilda Sterby play the sisters Amanda and Adolfine in Lars Johan Werle’s Tintomara, which has it’s premiere at Läckö Slott on the 9th July. The venue, Läckö Castle, is one of the most beautiful castles in Sweden in a stunning location on the shores of Sweden’s biggest lake, Lake Vänern, and Läckö Slott Opera is one of Sweden's favourite Summer opera festivals.
Tintomara is based on the event surrounding the murder of King Gustaf III at a masked ball in 1792. A mysterious young woman, Azouras Lazuli Tintomara La Tournerose, is used as a decoy in the despotic Baron Reuterholm’s plot to murder the king, and ends up falling victim herself to a treacherous bullet from a jealous admirer.
Matilda Sterby has this season made her Austrian and German debuts as La Contessa in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at Stadttheater Klagenfurt and Staastoper Hannover. She sings Marenka in Gothenburg Opera’s production of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride in the Autumn of 2022 and also joins the ensemble of the Baadisches Staatsoper Karlsruhe for the season.
ElIsabeth Leyser sung Brangäne in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde for Kulturhuset Spira earlier this year, and has in recent seasons appeared in the same role for Folkoperan Stockholm, as well as Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel for Norrlandsoperan.
The opera is directed by Mattias Ermedahl and conducted by Simon Kim Phipps.
Premiere Saturday July 9th, 2022, 8 pm.
Venue: Main Courtyard, Läckö Castle
After the premiere the opera will play every week (Tuesday-Wednesday, Friday-Saturday) until July 30th.
